I found a nice piece of gold with my detector
Hello Gents -
This has not been my best year detecting for gold. Yah, part of its my fault as I have spent a bunch of time that I might have spent prospecting having fun visiting with friends, filming videos, etc, etc. A few months ago, I found one little new patch that yielded a bunch of smaller nuggets, and I shared the patch with friends and my nephew, but it only yielded a little more than a quarter ounce and the largest nugget was 1 penneyweight. That 1 dwt piece had been my biggest nugget so far this year. I've also been doing exploring and had a bunch of skunk days as well. Well, having been skunked a bunch, I went back to a spot where I'd found gold in the past, and got a little lucky and snagged a nice one. It was only down about 6 inches. When I dug the hole, when I got the last scoop out of the hole, the dig pile had a yellow colored rock right on top (there are some yellow rocks there that are just iron stained rocks.). I thought to myself - wouldnt it be nice if that yellow rock was the target? - It was! It was so dirty I could not see for sure that it was gold until I picked it up and felt the weight. Total weight makes it a quarter ouncer (actual weight is 0.26 ounces or 8.1 grams). The buffalo nickel is the exact same size as a modern Jefferson nickel. This nuget is from California - the northern part of the mother lode country. I'll be headed back up there in a few weeks for one last trip before the weather turns too cold and the snow starts flying. Maybe I'll pick up a few more. Congrats! That is awesome.
Here in Colorado the pros swear by the White's GMT (Goldmaster) for prospecting. It does the best job of ground balancing in our mineral rich soil. I can get one for about $700 at my local coin store... if my wife would only let me. She said something about me finding enough gold to pay for the prospecting equipment I've already purchased. |

SLV - I bought the one I use (a Minelab GP Extreme) for $1500, used. I've probably spent an additional $500 in accessories on top of that. However I have found a lot more than $2000 in gold with it.

That's real nice, Chris. Thanks for keeping the dream alive. And thanks for the pictures. Is that buffalo nickel for sale? LOL

Re: I found a nice piece of gold with my detector
Gee Chris, my biggest is an eight pounder give or take a couple ounces. Detected it with an old 5500 White I got for $50 at a yard sale. Had to pound it out of solid rock on a cliff face above some old pre-historic diggins in the UP. Of course it was copper not gold, though it did have a few gram crystals of silver scattered across the top.
